We interviewed some outstanding women in 2018, leaders in their fields, influencers, disrupters and all hard working to continually achieve what they each define as success. Each shared valuable advice & lessons they learnt along the way and we’ve compiled our top picks.
Celebrate the incremental victories. It can be so easy to be caught up in ‘what’s next’ and that you always have something to do, and there is always something to ‘fix’ etc. But it is so important, for you and your team, to enjoy the wins along the way – whether it your 50th sale, or your new office, or a positive Google review. Enjoy the journey, as well as the destination.
Trust your gut and be guided by your instincts and feelings not the current reality.
Tenacity has to become your middle name… and your skin as tough as a rhino.
Other women in business are not competition, they are your mentors and support. Each one brings sound knowledge and advice, in actual fact all of my mentors have been mums. Often their wealth of knowledge has not necessarily been business related but how to divide time with children and running a business. It’s a juggle and you need all the tips and advice you can get.
Run your own race. To me this is something I remind myself of daily. I think it’s so important to focus on what you are trying to achieve, what your goals are and what your mission is. Staying true to this will help you stand out from the crowd.
Don’t forget about the power of human connection when growing your business. reach out to your idols, buy them a coffee, be genuine in your request to develop a relationship with them. There are so many amazing supportive women (and men!) that WANT to help and will give you priceless advice and guidance from their own experiences! Oh. and be prepared to work bloody hard! If you’re getting into your own biz so that you can work a few hours a day and sip cocktails on the beach the rest of the time you’re kidding yourself. Yes, that’s the ultimate goal but you’ve got to work your butt off to get it… hence why only a few reach that point!
Trust your gut and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. There are highs and lows and some really hard times, but you just have to wake up every day and know that you are moving forward, and building something amazing.
This is not necessarily on reflection, but general advice based on my observations – don’t strive for perfection and spend hours planning the perfect font, logo or images. Get your idea out there – don’t be afraid as the mistakes will help you learn. You need to validate your concept, and just launching is what you need to do to do that. Chances are you will have to change what you’re doing, so don’t be afraid to find out early so you can adapt.
Based on my own experience, my advice is don’t be afraid to charge, do not undervalue the expertise you can bring to a business. I heard on a podcast once “You are Gandalf to someone” – don’t forget that! Your clients sought you out because they need your help, and they value you – so value yourself! Of course don’t go nuts overcharging people, but be fair.
Never give up! Persevere and view your ideas as circular. I constantly go back to ideas or projects and re-feed energy into them when the timing is right, as timing can be everything. Being very intuitive and seeking guidance all the time means the ideas you get are way ahead of you being able to implement them in reality, straight away. Write ideas down. I have volumes of ideas journals but just don’t get caught running from pillar to post trying to implement them all at once or keep swapping to new and shiny projects!
